Sumantra Sen is a senior management executive, with over 25 years of progressive experience in portfolio management, research, and consulting. He is a specialist in Responsible Finance and Impact Investing, with expertise in harnessing innovation and partnerships for leading strategic transition of large investment programs. In recent assignments, he continues to engage with development institutions, government agencies, investors and businesses in advancing best practices in ESG integration and Impact Investing.
Sumantra is the Managing Director at Bodhin Research, a London headquartered firm, working at the intersection of financial economics, behavioural science, impact management and emerging technologies, curating insights and strategies for long-termism in financial markets. He also serves as Practice Chair- ESG & Sustainable Finance at General Carbon Advisory Services, where his team provides high-quality due-diligence and bespoke advisory services to investors and businesses. Sumantra is a member of the Management Committee and Senior Advisor at Open Academic Research (OAR), a group of non-profit research organizations in the UK and India. OAR is fostering collaborative research environments and scientific advancement by creating ‘X Living Labs’.
He is currently a Senior Advisor at Inflection Point Ventures an early-stage angel investing platform with over 14000 investors, which provides both monetary and non-monetary support to startups. In a recent assignment, Sumantra was Executive Director at Finnacle Advisors, an investment bank empanelled as a specialist at The World Bank and ADB, where he played the central role in creating frameworks for due diligence, conducting assessments of projects’ ESG performance and development of investment theses for sustainable infrastructure-themed impact fund. Sumantra was the Founder of India’s Sustainable Investment Forum, and has served on the Advisory Board of ASrIA, Asia’s Sustainable Finance platform based at Hong Kong. He supervised cutting edge research and analytics on ESG/ stakeholder communications and partnered with UNEP-FI and UN- PRI for launching capacity building programs in the region. He was Partner at Contrarian Vriddhi Fund, an earlystage investor with a mandate to invest in businesses delivering core goods and services in middle markets.
Earlier in his career, Sumantra was Vice President, Global Wealth & Investment Management at Bank of America, where he led a team of over 300 analysts for managing Global Institutional & Private client portfolios. He provided thought leadership across the portfolio management suite and was the recipient of Bank of America Spirit Medallion, the highest individual award for performance. He was Senior Investment Counsellor at ABN AMRO Bank Investment Services where he led a team of investment counsellors, and was the recipient of ABN AMRO Beyond Ambition award for highest growth in Assets Under Management. He was also one of the core team members at ABN AMRO for positioning India’s maiden Sustainable Development Fund. Sumantra is an MBA and a member of the Chartered Institute of Securities & Management (CISI) UK. He has co-authored published work in responsible investment and sustainable development including ‘Evolutions in Sustainable Investing’ by Wiley Finance and ‘Thirsty Nation’ published by Penguin Random House. His expert comments and articles have been published in United Nations’ reports, The Economic Times, CFO Magazine, Business Today, SRI- Connect, Ethical Markets, Clean Biz Asia and Responsible Investor amongst other media resources. He is also a frequent speaker on these themes at global investment summits.
