Internship fellowship · Business, economics and finance

Marketing internship fellowship

This marketing internship gives you a real behaviour to change, with a mentor who reviews your plan and your results. You design campaigns that get people to segregate waste or save water, run them online and in a neighbourhood, and measure what changed on the ground.

For school and university students interested in marketing, social media or communication who want campaign results they can show. Online, with field work near where you live. The fellowship is paid because every fellow receives time and attention from senior researchers and leaders.

Marketing and Digital Marketing and sustainability

Why marketing matters for sustainability

Many environmental problems come down to everyday choices, such as whether a household segregates its waste or a family fixes a leaking tap. Marketers study why people choose what they do. They test whether a clearer message or an easier option changes that choice. The methods that sell products can help a city cut waste, as long as someone measures what people do afterwards.

Earth5R has mobilised 2.5M citizens across 150+ Indian cities. Its teams go door to door and train housing societies on waste segregation and composting. At its street hackathons, citizens propose climate solutions. Waste audits and household surveys recorded on the Earth5R app give a way to check what people do after a campaign. As a fellow you plan campaigns for this work and measure them with that data.

This work links to the UN Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 12, Responsible consumption and production and Goal 11, Sustainable cities and communities.

Available projects

Available projects in the marketing internship fellowship

You join Earth5R’s live work through your own subject. Your mentor shapes the final project with you.

01

Segregation campaign for a society

Plan a campaign that gets residents of one housing society to segregate wet and dry waste, run it with your mentor’s guidance, and measure the change with waste audits before and after.

02

Water saving message test

Write two versions of a water saving message, test them with households during door-to-door surveys or online, and compare which one more people act on.

03

Social media series from the field

Plan a short social media series built on photos and data from a lake or river cleanup, track reach and replies, and report which posts got people to act.

04

Street hackathon outreach

Plan how to bring citizens to a street hackathon where they propose climate solutions, test different invitations, and count who comes through each channel.

The FIELDWORK method

How the marketing internship fellowship works

Every fellow moves through four phases. Each phase is checked by your mentor before you move on.

Go into the field near where you live and collect primary data for your project in Marketing and Digital Marketing.

02

Frame and Design

Find the root cause in your data and frame a problem worth solving, with your mentor.

03

Model

Build a working model, analysis or design for your solution, and test it.

04

Build and Deploy

Put your solution to work, measure the result and publish a verified record on earth5r.org.

Along the way you take part in research conversations with professors at MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and other universities, and ask your own questions. See how FIELDWORK works.

Questions

Marketing internship: common questions

Is this a digital marketing internship or field marketing?

It’s both. You plan posts, messages and short videos, and you also talk to residents in person and run part of each campaign in a neighbourhood. Waste audit data then shows whether behaviour changed, which online metrics can’t show on their own.

How do I measure whether a campaign worked?

You pick one clear action, such as segregating waste, and measure it before and after the campaign. Waste audits, household surveys and online metrics such as reach and sign-ups give you numbers to compare, and your mentor reviews your method.

Do I need design skills for a marketing internship?

No. Simple tools are enough for posters and posts. Most of the work is understanding your audience and measuring what they do after they see your message. Students with design or video skills can use them in their campaigns.

Is the marketing internship fellowship paid?

Yes. It is a paid, mentored internship fellowship. The fee pays for live mentoring, dialogues with global researchers, support in the field, references and lifelong hosting of your work. Fee details are available on request.

Can I do this marketing internship online?

Yes. FIELDWORK runs online, and your field work takes place near where you live. Your mentor guides you through each step.

Who can apply?

School and university students from India and other countries. The fellowship prepares you for university, postgraduate study and work.

What do I get at the end?

A certificate, a letter of recommendation, a project report and a verified profile on earth5r.org, where universities and employers can check your work.
