FIELDWORK · Grades 9 to 12 · Business, economics and finance

High school marketing internship and research fellowship

This high school marketing internship lets students in Grades 9 to 12 plan a campaign that changes one everyday habit, with a mentor who reviews the plan and the results. You design messages that get people to segregate waste or save water, test them at school or in your housing society and measure what changed.

For school students who take IB Business Management, IGCSE or CBSE Business Studies or ICSE Commercial Studies and want campaign results they can show. Online, with field work near home and a parent or guardian present at every self-guided activity. The fellowship is paid because every student receives time and attention from senior researchers and leaders.

Marketing and sustainability

Why marketing matters for sustainability

Many environmental problems come down to small daily choices, such as whether a family separates wet and dry waste or fixes a dripping tap. Marketers study why people choose what they do. They test whether a clearer message or an easier option changes that choice. The same methods that sell a product can help a neighbourhood cut its waste, as long as someone checks what people do afterwards.

Earth5R has mobilised 2.5M citizens across 150+ Indian cities. Its teams run door-to-door household surveys and train communities on waste segregation and composting. At its street hackathons, citizens propose climate solutions. The Earth5R app records waste audits and household surveys, which can show whether behaviour changed after a campaign. As a fellow you plan campaigns for your school or housing society and measure them the same way.

This work links to the UN Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 12, Responsible consumption and production and Goal 11, Sustainable cities and communities.

Available projects

Available projects in this high school marketing internship

Each project fits around school work and takes place near home. Your mentor shapes the final project with you.

01

Segregation campaign at school

Plan a campaign that gets classmates to put waste in the right bin, run a waste audit of school bins before and after, and compare the results with your mentor.

02

Water saving message test

Write two versions of a water saving message, test them with family, neighbours and classmates in a short survey, and compare which one more people say they would act on.

03

Social media series on a cleanup

Plan a short series of posts built on photos and data from an Earth5R cleanup, track reach and replies, and report which posts got people to respond or sign up.

04

Posters for your housing society

Design posters for one clear action in your own housing society, such as composting wet waste, and count how many households take part before and after.

Your school programme

How a high school marketing internship fits your school programme

For IB, IGCSE, CBSE and ICSE students. Your school decides what counts towards its own requirements.

IB CAS

A school or housing society campaign on waste segregation can form a CAS project with a clear service element. Your CAS coordinator decides how it is recorded.

Extended Essay and IA

Survey answers and before-and-after audit data from your own campaign can support a Business Management Extended Essay on marketing. Your supervisor approves the question and method.

MYP, IGCSE and CBSE projects

A tested campaign can fit the MYP Personal Project and the marketing project in CBSE and ICSE Business Studies. It also applies IGCSE marketing topics.

University applications

A campaign with measured results gives you a specific example to discuss in a marketing, business or communication personal statement or interview.

The FIELDWORK method

How the high school marketing internship works

Every student moves through four phases. Your mentor checks each phase before you move on, and sessions pause during board exams.

01

Observe and Map

Go into the field near home, with a parent or guardian, and collect primary data for your project in Marketing.

02

Frame and Design

Find the root cause in your data and frame a problem worth solving, with your mentor.

03

Model

Build a working model, analysis or design for your solution, and test it.

04

Build and Deploy

Put your solution to work, measure the result and publish a verified record on earth5r.org.

Along the way you take part in research conversations with professors at MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and other universities, and ask your own questions. See how FIELDWORK works.

Questions from students and parents

High school marketing internship: common questions

Is this a digital or a field marketing project?

Both. You plan posts, posters and short videos, and you also run part of each campaign at school or in your housing society. A waste audit then shows whether behaviour changed, which online numbers can’t show on their own.

Do I need design skills for this high school marketing internship?

No. Simple tools are enough for posters and posts. Most of the work is understanding your audience and checking what they do after they see your message. Students with design or video skills can use them in their campaigns.

How much time does a campaign take each week?

The weekly load is light. Planning and design happen at home, and the campaign runs at school or in your housing society, so it fits around homework and tests. Your child agrees a timeline with the mentor.

Is the high school marketing internship paid?

Yes. FIELDWORK is a paid, mentored programme. The fee pays for live mentoring, dialogues with global researchers, support in the field, references and lifelong hosting of your work. Fee details are available on request.

Can my child do this high school marketing internship online?

Yes. Mentoring sessions run online, and field work takes place near where you live.

Is a parent or guardian present during field work?

Yes. A parent or guardian is present at every self-guided field activity. Online sessions are for students.

Does FIELDWORK pause during board exams?

Yes. Sessions pause during board exams, so the fellowship fits around school work.

What do students get at the end?

A certificate, a letter of recommendation, a project report and a verified profile on earth5r.org, where universities can check the work.
